M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang
M. Butterfly melds a satirical take on the opera Madame Butterfly with the real life story of a French diplomat who was seduced by a cross-dressing Chinese spy. It chews on themes of misunderstanding and misconception across cultural and gendered lines, and of the interplay between identity and power. My focus with these designs was to allude to the ways in which characters are foils for each other, and to play up elements of disguise and performance.
